Modelling accretion disc and stellar wind interactions: the case of Sgr A*

Sgr A* is an ideal target to study low-luminosity accreting systems. It has been recently proposed that properties of the accretion flow around Sgr A* can be probed through its interactions with the stellar wind of nearby massive stars belonging to the S-cluster. When a star intercepts the accretion disk, the ram and thermal pressures of the disk terminate the stellar wind leading to the formation of a bow shock structure. Here, a semi-analytical model is constructed which describes the geometry of the termination shock formed in the wind. With the employment of numerical hydrodynamic simulations, this model is both verified and extended to a region prone to Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. …
ELDAR, a new method to identify AGN in multi-filter surveys: the ALHAMBRA test case

We present ELDAR, a new method that exploits the potential of medium- and narrow-band filter surveys to securely identify active galactic nuclei (AGN) and determine their redshifts. Our methodology improves on traditional approaches by looking for AGN emission lines expected to be identified against the continuum, thanks to the width of the filters. To assess its performance, we apply ELDAR to the data of the ALHAMBRA (Advance Large Homogeneous Area Medium Band Redshift Astronomical) survey, which covered an effective area of 2.38 deg2 with 20 contiguous medium-band optical filters down to F814W ≃ 24.5. Enhanced crystal stability in a binary mixture of charged colloidal spheres.

We report on the phase behavior of a binary charged sphere mixture of size ratio $\ensuremath{\Gamma}=0.68$ and charge ratio $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\approx}1$ as a function of composition $p$ and number density $n$. For $p=0.1--0.3$ we observe freezing at densities well below the freezing densities of the pure components. At all compositions our data indicate the formation of substitutional alloy crystals of body centered cubic structure. No indications for compound formation were observed. The role of connectivity in the properties of sedimented materials

Effective-medium theories for both random packings of elastic discs and mats of randomly sedimented elastic fibers can be constructed such that the effective material stiffness depends on the stiffness and geometry of the constituents of the material, and the number density of contacts. It is demonstrated that the number density of contacts together with the geometry of the constituents also determine the porosity of these materials. Solidification of a colloidal hard sphere like model system approaching and crossing the glass transition

We investigated the process of vitrification and crystallization in a model system of colloidal hard spheres. The kinetics of the solidification process was measured using time resolved static light scattering, while the time evolution of the dynamic properties was determined using time resolved dynamic light scattering. By performing further analysis we confirm that solidification of hard sphere colloids is mediated by precursors. Analyzing the dynamic properties we can show that the long time dynamics and thus the shear rigidity of the metastable melt is highly correlated with the number density of solid clusters (precursors) nucleated. The yield and morphology (length, width, thickness) of stoichiometric Bi2Se3 nanoribbons grown by physical vapor deposition is studied as a function of the diameters and areal number density of the Au catalyst nanoparticles of mean diameters 8–150 nm formed by dewetting Au layers of thicknesses 1.5–16 nm. The highest yield of the Bi2Se3 nanoribbons is reached when synthesized on dewetted 3 nm thick Au layer (mean diameter of Au nanoparticles ~10 nm) and exceeds the nanoribbon yield obtained in catalyst-free synthesis by almost 50 times. Molecular dynamics simulations of colloids: Supercooled Yukawa systems

We performed molecular dynamics simulations on one and two component Yukawa systems. Cooling the system down and inspecting pair distribution functions (pdf) and bond correlation functions (bcf) we found the one component system to crystallize into a bcc-like lattice rather than an fcc lattice which is the stable phase of the simulated system at low temperatures. Upon cooling the two component system freezes into a glassy state without exhibiting crystalline structure in pdf or bcf. Abstract Our generalised Bethe ansatz method is used to formulate the statistical mechanics of the classical Toda lattice in terms of a set of coupled integral equations expressed in terms of appropriate action-angle variables. The phase space as coordinatised by these action-angle variables is constrained; and both the soliton number density and the soliton contribution to the free energy density can be shown to decouple from the phonon degrees of freedom and to depend only on soliton-soliton interactions. This makes it possible to evaluate the temperature dependence of the soliton number density which, to leading order, is found to be proportional to T 1 3 .

A suspension of charged colloidal silica spheres exhibiting a bi-modal size distribution of particles, thereby mimicking a binary mixture, was studied using time-resolved ultra-small-angle synchrotron X-ray scattering (USAXS).
